Learn the SAP Cloud Application Programming Model (CAP) with Atos, an SAP Platinum Partner. You will design data with CDS, build OData services in Node.js, add SAP Fiori screens, secure your app and put it live on SAP BTP. You build real projects from the first week.
SAP BTP CAP means the SAP Cloud Application Programming Model running on SAP Business Technology Platform. In simple words, it is SAP’s own way of building business apps in the cloud.
Let us take the two parts one by one.
SAP BTP is SAP’s cloud platform. Think of it as a big, safe building in the cloud where companies keep their extra apps, connect their systems, store data and use AI. Companies use it to add new features to SAP without changing the main SAP system.
SAP CAP is the set of tools and rules you use to build apps inside that building. SAP calls it a framework of languages, libraries and tools for building enterprise-grade services and applications. It gives you a ready path to follow, so you do not have to invent everything yourself.
In many projects, developers spend most of their time on boring setup work. They create tables, write code to read and save data, build service endpoints and add security by hand. CAP does much of this for you.
You tell CAP what your app is about. For example: “I have Courses. Each Course has a title and seats. I want to share Courses as a service.” CAP then works out how to create the database tables and the service. You only write extra code when your business needs something special.
This gives three simple benefits:
CDS stands for Core Data Services. It is a simple language for describing your data and services. If you learn CAP, you are mostly learning CDS well.
With CDS you describe:
From one CDS model, CAP creates the database tables, the OData service and much of the screen design for SAP Fiori. One model drives the whole app. That is why CAP projects move fast and stay neat.
CAP works with two languages. Node.js (JavaScript) is the most common starting point because it is light and quick to set up. Java is used in teams that already work with Java and Spring Boot. In both cases the CDS model stays the same. Only the custom code changes. In our course, the main hands-on path uses Node.js, and we also show how the Java version compares.
Every CAP project has the same simple folders. Once you know them, you can open any CAP project at work and find your way around.
| Folder | What it is for | What you find inside |
|---|---|---|
| db/ | Your data | CDS files that describe your entities, plus sample data in CSV files |
| srv/ | Your services | CDS files that share your data as services, and JavaScript files with custom logic |
| app/ | Your screens | SAP Fiori apps and screen settings |
| package.json and mta.yaml | Settings and going live | Project settings and the file used to deploy to SAP BTP |
Here is how small a CAP app can start. First, describe the data:
Then share it as a service:
Type cds watch in the terminal and CAP starts a working OData service with a test database. That is a running backend in a few lines. In the course, you build on this step by step until you have a full, secure app running in the cloud.
SAP is moving to the cloud and to a “clean core”. CAP sits right in the middle of that change.
For many years, companies changed their SAP system by adding custom code inside it. This made upgrades slow and risky. Now SAP asks companies to keep the core clean. Extra features should be built next to SAP, on SAP BTP, and connect through safe, official APIs. CAP is one of the main ways to build these side-by-side apps. Every company that follows clean core needs people who can do this work.
SAP’s own guides, tutorials and sample apps for building on BTP are largely built around CAP. When the platform owner backs one framework this strongly, projects follow, and so do jobs.
With CAP you can extend SAP S/4HANA, build apps that use SuccessFactors data, create services on SAP HANA Cloud, and even build products that many customers subscribe to. The same skill works across all of these.
If you know ABAP, CAP helps you move into cloud work while still using familiar ideas like CDS, OData and Fiori. If you know JavaScript or Java, CAP is an easy door into the SAP world. This makes CAP one of the friendliest ways to start or grow an SAP technical career.
SAP Build Code brings Joule, SAP’s AI assistant, into CAP development. It can suggest data models, services and sample data from simple prompts. But AI can make mistakes. People who understand CAP basics are the ones who can check and fix what AI creates.
In short: clean core, the move to S/4HANA Cloud and the growth of SAP BTP all point the same way. Learning CAP now puts you where SAP work is going.
You do not need years of SAP experience. You need basic programming knowledge and a wish to build things.
Add cloud skills to your ABAP and CDS knowledge, and stay ready as projects move to clean core.
Use the skills you already have to enter SAP projects, where business knowledge is highly valued.
Learn CAP ideas and see how the CAP Java SDK fits with Spring Boot.
Move from screens only to full-stack work by building the backend your apps use.
B.E., B.Tech, MCA, BCA and B.Sc IT graduates can start an SAP technical career with a modern skill.
Understand how extensions are built so you can design better solutions with developers.
SAP experience is not required. We explain SAP ideas like OData, Fiori and S/4HANA extensions inside the course. Not sure if you are ready? Talk to our counsellor and we will check with you.
14 modules that take you from SAP BTP basics to a secure app running live in the cloud. Every module mixes short theory with hands-on work.
Before you write code, you need to know the place your app will live. This module explains SAP BTP in plain words and shows how its parts fit together.
You set up a full CAP workspace and learn the commands you will use every day.
A quick refresher for experienced developers and a clear start for newer learners.
The most important module. You learn to design clean data models that drive the whole app.
You learn how a few lines of CDS become a full OData service that screens and other systems can use.
CAP handles normal work. This module teaches you to add the special rules your business needs.
Work fast with a local database, then switch to SAP HANA Cloud for real use.
Give users a clean, professional screen, mostly from annotations.
Business apps must control who sees and changes data. CAP makes this simple with annotations.
Real extensions use data from other systems. You learn to connect to them safely.
An app is only useful once it runs in the cloud. You do a full, real deployment.
Real teams test their code and automate delivery.
Topics you will meet as you grow into senior roles, plus the newest tools.
You build one complete app, then get ready for the exam and for job interviews.
We update the syllabus as SAP releases change. Topic order and depth can vary by batch. Ask a counsellor for the current batch plan.
Recruiters want to see what you can build. These projects become your portfolio.
Model products, categories and suppliers, load sample data, share it as an OData service and query it with filters and expand.
Header and item data, draft editing in a Fiori List Report and Object Page, input checks, and Approve and Reject actions.
Customers raise issues, support staff solve them, and roles control who can see and change what. Tested with different mock users.
Use a business partner API from the SAP Business Accelerator Hub, mock it locally, mix it with your own data and share one clean service.
Move an app to SAP HANA Cloud, set up the app router and XSUAA, build the MTA file, deploy to Cloud Foundry and fix issues using logs.
Design, build, secure and deploy a complete app for a business case, then present it like a real client demo.
Each project is built step by step with your trainer. You learn the commands and also the reasons: why use a composition here, why keep one service per use case, why a check belongs in a before handler. That understanding is what makes you confident in interviews and on the job.

Both are modern SAP ways to build apps. The right one depends on your background.
RAP is the ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model. It is the modern way to build apps in ABAP, and it runs inside S/4HANA or the SAP BTP ABAP environment. CAP runs on SAP BTP with Node.js or Java and is made for cloud apps that sit next to SAP. Both use CDS ideas, both create OData services, and both work well with SAP Fiori.
| Point | SAP CAP | SAP RAP |
|---|---|---|
| Language | Node.js or Java | ABAP |
| Where it runs | SAP BTP Cloud Foundry or Kyma | S/4HANA or SAP BTP ABAP environment |
| Main tool | Business Application Studio or VS Code | Eclipse with ABAP Development Tools |
| Database | SAP HANA Cloud, SQLite and others | SAP HANA through the ABAP stack |
| Best for | Side-by-side apps, new cloud apps, SaaS, multi-system apps | Apps that work closely inside S/4HANA |
| Easiest for | JavaScript and Java developers, freshers, ABAP developers moving to cloud | Experienced ABAP developers |
Our simple advice: if you come from JavaScript, Java or web work, or you are a fresher, start with CAP. If you are an ABAP developer, learning CAP makes you more flexible, and many senior SAP roles value people who know both. Real projects often use both.
Knowing real use cases helps you connect class lessons to real jobs.
A factory wants an extra approval step for big purchase requests and a dashboard for plant managers. The team builds a CAP app on BTP that reads data through official S/4HANA APIs, saves approvals in its own tables, and shows a Fiori screen. The core stays clean and upgrades stay easy.
A company uses S/4HANA for finance, SuccessFactors for HR and some non-SAP tools. One CAP app pulls data from all of them and shows one view, for example a new joiner onboarding app.
Many teams still track requests in Excel and email. CAP turns these into proper apps with a database, permissions, history and a clean screen. These quick projects are often where new CAP developers get their first experience.
SAP partners build apps that many customers subscribe to. CAP’s multitenancy keeps each customer’s data separate, and its extension features let customers adjust the app.
CAP skills are used by SAP partners, consulting firms, global capability centres and companies that run SAP.
| Role | What you would do |
|---|---|
| SAP BTP CAP Developer | Build data models, services and logic with CAP and deploy them to SAP BTP |
| SAP BTP Full-Stack Developer | Work on both the CAP backend and the Fiori or SAPUI5 screens |
| SAP BTP Extension Developer | Build side-by-side apps for S/4HANA and SuccessFactors following clean core |
| SAP Cloud Application Developer | Build new cloud business apps and connections on BTP |
| SAP BTP Technical Consultant | Mix development with client meetings, solution design and delivery |
| SAP BTP Solution Architect (with experience) | Plan BTP landscapes, choose between CAP, RAP and other services, and guide teams |
Most people start as a CAP or BTP developer, working on services, logic and screens with help from seniors. With project experience, you take ownership of features and talk to business users. Over time, strong developers grow into tech lead, technical consultant and architect roles. Adding skills like SAP Fiori, SAP Integration Suite, RAP or SAP HANA Cloud speeds this up.

Before you write CDS, write the business objects in plain English. What is a purchase request? What does it hold? Who approves it? Good models come from clear thinking.
SAP keeps detailed CAP documentation, often called capire, with cookbooks for deployment, security and more. Learning to read it is a real job skill, and our trainers show you how.
Add a short README to each project explaining the business case and features. A clean GitHub profile gives interviewers something real to talk about.
Real work has failed deployments and permission issues. Learn to read logs and use the debugger. People who can fix problems are the people teams trust.

SAP BTP CAP is the SAP Cloud Application Programming Model used on SAP Business Technology Platform. It is SAP's framework of languages, libraries and tools for building business apps and services in the cloud. You describe your data and services in CDS, and CAP handles much of the technical work like database access and OData services.
CAP stands for Cloud Application Programming Model. It is often called SAP CAP or SAP BTP CAP because apps built with it usually run on SAP BTP.
Yes. SAP asks companies to keep their core system clean and build extra features as side-by-side apps on SAP BTP. CAP is one of SAP's main recommended frameworks for this, so demand for CAP developers grows as companies move to S/4HANA.
No. Basic programming, preferably JavaScript, plus simple database and web knowledge is enough. The course explains SAP ideas like OData, Fiori and S/4HANA extensions.
CAP supports Node.js (JavaScript or TypeScript) and Java. Data models and services are written in CDS in both cases. Our main hands-on path uses Node.js.
Yes. Many ABAP developers learn CAP to add cloud skills. CDS, OData and Fiori will feel familiar. The new parts are JavaScript, SAP BTP services and cloud deployment, all covered in the course.
CAP runs on SAP BTP with Node.js or Java and is mainly used for side-by-side cloud apps. RAP uses ABAP and runs in S/4HANA or the SAP BTP ABAP environment. Both use CDS ideas and work with SAP Fiori.
CDS means Core Data Services. It is the simple language used in CAP to describe data, links between data, services and annotations. CAP uses these models to create database tables, OData services and screen settings.
You will be able to design data with CDS, build OData services, add business logic, create SAP Fiori screens, secure apps with roles, connect to S/4HANA APIs and deploy apps to SAP BTP Cloud Foundry with SAP HANA Cloud.
Yes. You build six projects: a product catalogue, a purchase request approval app, an incident management app, an S/4HANA extension, a cloud deployment and a final capstone that you present like a client demo.
You practise with SAP Business Application Studio, local tools like VS Code with the CAP development kit, and SAP BTP trial or free-tier options where available. Your counsellor will confirm the setup for your batch.
Yes. As an authorized SAP education partner, Atos guides you to the right SAP developer certification, runs revision sessions and explains the exam process. Atos can also guide you on SAP Learning Hub and certification access options.
It is not compulsory, but it helps your resume stand out. Practical project work matters just as much in interviews, so it is best to have both.
Common roles are SAP BTP CAP Developer, SAP BTP Full-Stack Developer, SAP BTP Extension Developer, SAP Cloud Application Developer and SAP BTP Technical Consultant. With experience, you can grow into tech lead and architect roles.
Yes. Atos provides resume help, mock interviews and career guidance. Atos Training has placed 4366+ candidates across SAP modules. Final results depend on each learner's skills and interview performance.
